rough trade

Rough from Django's Ghost on Vimeo.

While punk rock was failing miserably in the marketplace here in the US of A, the young people across the pond picked it up and ran with it. Punk rock was at it its greatest a mercurial thing, and it was like those kids hit it with a hammer and the resultant little drops of mercury grew up to become mercury of its own.

Rough Trade started out as a record store and became to punk culture what City Lights Books had been to the beats -- the gathering place that became the imprintuer. RT distributed a great many of the era's best stuff, or had it on their label, and their role in punk rock and post-punk cannot be overestimated. If you love The Fall, Slits, Delta 5, Gang of 4, Mekons, Stiff Little Fingers etc -- this is for you.

(I wish they'd dwelled more on the label side of things in this doc.)
