Alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, often nicknamed "Rabbit", was one of the most important things about Duke Ellington's sound. He was arguably the most expressive soloist of his era, right up with Louis Armstrong, Bob Dunn, and Naftule Brandwine.
He did some of his best work well into the 1960's, with Duke (who also did some of his best work during those years). This clip is of "Ishfahan", part of the Far East Suite, cut in 1965.
The greatest? At least damn close.
