my childhood in punk rock philadelphia

video

some time ago, a documentary about my work was in the making. then i pulled the plug on it (too serious, earnest, and self-important). but i am going to post a few of the more enjoyable moments.

the dead milkmen's recent reunion has had me reflecting on philly, punk rock, and all like that, so now's as good a time as any to recollect it for you.

Real-live Border Radio

Back before -- long before -- Dave Alvin wrote his jewel, border radio was a force of radio in the 1930s that sold quack medicine, spiritualism (also quack), and even cancer cures (ditto). And also it was a haven for great live country music programming.

The Crazy Water Crystals company of Mineral Springs, TX, was typical of this (and their product, though by no means a cure for anything, was a lot less dangerous than most of its ilk).

One of my favorite blogs, Allen's Archive of Early Country Music, has three incredible shows available for download. These are a joy. Not only do we get to hear great local country music, but radio that's worth a damn.
